Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson signed a declaration on Wednesday, supported by more than 260 mayors, aimed at transforming the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence basin into a “blue-green economic corridor of the 21st century.”
The elected mayors of these three major cities took advantage of the annual convention of the Alliance of Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities, being held in Montreal, to make the announcement.
The declaration represents a commitment to “attract blue and green industries” to communities in the basin, such as high-tech companies that have strict water consumption policies.
Additionally, they pledged to “build clean and accessible waterfronts for communities, establish clean and renewable energy sources, and develop sustainable trade, mobility and tourism, and their integration by waterway.”
US Ambassador David Cohen moderated a discussion between the three mayors prior to the signing of the agreement.
He pointed out that in 2021, Washington had announced a billion dollars over five years to improve these freshwater ecosystems, and that during President Joe Biden’s visit to Canada last year, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pledged 420 million dollars over 10 years to preserve and restore the waters of the Great Lakes.
